Architects Igor Reyes, from Nichols Architects, and Rick Gonzalez, from REG Architects, were interviewed by Fox13 Tampa Bay about an upcoming project in Sarasota.
Seaward Development, the owner of Miramar Plaza, has proposed a plan to restore the historic building after the previous owner’s request for demolition was denied by the city’s Historic Preservation Board. Now, the 102-year-old building requires significant restoration, with an estimated cost of $29 to $30 million. Architects Rick Gonzalez and Igor Reyes unveiled a project that includes the construction of two 18-story residential towers to fund the restoration. The plan also aims to maintain the Miramar’s original style, with residential units and commercial spaces below. The proposal needs to go through a rezoning process before moving forward, and the architects hope the case will serve as an example for the preservation of other historic buildings in the state.
