Bespoke dog houses. Extravagant cat condos.

No, it’s not the latest trending topic for social media influencers, but rather the focus of a novel competition among local architects and designers benefiting an increasingly important program at Greenville County Animal Care.

The PAWchitecture design and build animal furniture competition kicked off in July and challenged local architecture teams to create custom dog houses or cat condos that will eventually be sold at auction. The proceeds will benefit Greenville County Animal Care’s Safety Net Foster Program.

The entries will be displayed Oct. 14 at Noma Square during Fall for Greenville and Oct. 15-30 at Auro Hotels’ Hyatt Regency Greenville, 220 N. Main St. The online auction will run Oct. 14-30.

The Pawchitecture competition

The PAWchitecture competition is being spearheaded by AIA Greenville, the Upstate’s arm of the South Carolina chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The idea was introduced by Miami-based Nichols Architects after that firm participated in a similar competition in its home city.

It took root and gained momentum in part because it offered designers a unique set of challenges and considerations, according to Igor Reyes, partner at Nichols Architects. He added his firm’s work in the Greenville area demonstrated the region’s energy, character and readily apparent love of pets, which made it a great candidate to introduce the PAWchitecture model of giving back to the community.

“It’s a whole new realm,” Reyes said. “It does get into the realm of ‘how far can I take this?’”
