A new 24-story tower under the luxury W Hotels brand is coming to one of Pompano Beach’s most prominent beachside locations, a team of developers announced Wednesday. It’s one of the many new developments that will redefine the city’s skyline.

It’ll be called the W Pompano Beach Hotel & Residences, at 200 N. Ocean Drive, at the northeast corner of Atlantic Boulevard and State Road A1A.

“Obviously, Pompano is attracting a lot of development,” Pompano Beach Mayor Rex Hardin said. “We have been discovered.”

The building was designed to dovetail with the beachside view, the project’s architect told the South Florida Sun Sentinel on Wednesday.

“We are making the building feel very fluid, very watery, very wavy, manipulated by the wind, and it belongs on the beach,” said Igor Reyes, a partner at Coral Gables-based Nichols Architects. “The lines belong to the beach, not in an urban context.”

Although he has worked on other W Hotel projects, such as the waterfront one in Miami Beach, he said this one was “designed specifically to the site.” He said there were efforts to “respect the traffic patterns,” adding, “We respect what’s there and we build from there.”
